AIL Mining was contracted for the design and supply of four sets of Bolt-A-Bin bridge abutments for the Mary’s River iron ore operation on Baffin Island in Canada’s High Arctic.
All-weather solution perfect for Arctic conditions
Often chosen for remote retaining walls, headwalls, wingwalls or abutments, Bolt-A-Bin is a versatile modular bin-style system that assembles easily without the need for heavy equipment, pile driving or concrete pouring.
Bolt-A-Bin cells are formed from strong Galvanized and Aluminized Type 2 steel components that are bolted together at the job site and then filled with granular material. The fill material and the metal shell act as a gravity-retaining wall to resist surcharged loading, sliding and overturning of the earth behind the wall.
AIL Mining worked closely with the project partners and our production manufacturing and shipping teams to ensure tight project timelines were met. Due to the remote location, all components were container-shipped by sea for on-site assembly.
Eight structures assembled in two weeks
Things went very well and the client’s construction teams assembled all eight abutment structures in about two weeks in extremely cold conditions. We also supplied a large amount of Corrugated Steel Pipe for this project.
